The first varieties were harvested as early as the end of July\u2014an unusually early start. Thanks to favorable weather conditions, the harvest is proceeding at the same pace as when it began. The Angerhof-Tschida winery in Illmitz announced the start of the Trockenbeerenauslese harvest as early as September 18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is earlier than ever before. We\u2019re a month ahead of schedule compared to an average year. Normally, the Sp\u00e4tlese is taking place right now,\u201d explains winemaker Hans Tschida. The sweet wine specialist can\u2019t remember such an early harvest of Trockenbeerenauslese.<\/p>\n<p>The quality of the grapes is top-notch. Tschida is more than satisfied with the quality of the grapes. He is currently harvesting the early Bouvier variety. Sixty percent of the grapes show signs of Botrytis, while 40 percent are healthy. \u201cWith so many healthy grapes, this can only result in a good Trockenbeerenauslese. Based on my experience, I expect a very fruity, harmonious wine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harvesting at the Tschida estate is expected to continue until mid-November, until (almost) all the grapes have been picked. And then things will get especially exciting: \u201cWe want to produce an ice wine again this year, even though it\u2019s always a risk. However, the grapes on five hectares of vineyard land will remain on the vines. Those are reserved for ice wine. So the harvest season remains exciting for us for a very long time,\u201d Tschida says with a smile in an interview with BVZ.<\/p>\n<p>The Illmitz-based producer makes mostly sweet wines, along with red wines, which account for about 30 percent of total production. One of them is Hans Tschida from Illmitz. His commitment to quality in grape production and his subtle intuition in the cellar define his multi-award-winning wines; 70 percent of his wine production falls into the Pr\u00e4dikat category. The climate around Lake Neusiedl helps him in this endeavor, as it could hardly be better for producing Botrytis wines. When the grapes have already reached a sufficiently high sugar content in the fall and the early morning fog sets in, the berries become infected with the desired noble rot almost overnight. A nightmare for red wine growers in northern Burgenland, a gift from nature to sweet wine producers. Stylistically, the wines from the Angerhof captivate with their varietal character and elegance. They tend to be reductive in style, and when it comes to sugar levels, Hans Tschida usually prefers the lower end of the spectrum. Thick, syrupy essences are not his thing. The drinkability of his wines is of paramount importance to him. His wines are never cloying, and he is a fan of the L\u00fcss vineyard because the wines from there typically have an acidity level that\u2019s one per mille higher. S\u00e4mling is the variety with which the winery has earned an excellent reputation. But he\u2019s also particularly fond of his Sp\u00e4tlese and Auslesen. They\u2019re the perfect introduction for anyone looking to explore sweet wines. Since 2010, the wines of this Illmitz-based sweet wine star have been honored with a total of 40 IWC gold, 36 silver, and four bronze medals, as well as 19 trophies.
